"The Hiu 03 patrol ship, skippered by Capt. Adriansyah Pamuji, made the arrest," acting Director General of Fisheries and Marine Resources Monitoring (PSDKP) Agus Suherman stated here on Wednesday.
The fishing vessel, with four crew members of Myanmar nationality onboard, was detained while operating illegally in Malacca Straits, trespassing some one mile into the Indonesian territory.
The ship had failed to comply with the ban on the use of trawls in Indonesia and carried no flag. However, after examination of its documents, the ministry's officers found that it was a Malaysian ship.
"The ship has violated the law, as it operated within the Indonesian territory without permit and used trawl," Suherman noted.
The foreign ship has violated Law No. 31 of 2004 on fisheries as amended by Law No. 45 of 2009 carrying a maximum penalty of six years imprisonment and subject to Rp20 billion in fine.
"The ship and its crew members were escorted to the PSDKP base in Batam, Riau Islands, for further investigation," he revealed.
With this arrest, the total count of foreign fishing vessels detained by the ministry during the January-June period reached 34, comprising 15 Vietnamese ships, 15 Malaysian ships, and four Philippine ships.
