This movement is one of the efforts to restore the quality of the Martapura River contaminated from human waste,Martapura, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Regent Banjar Khalilurrahman launched the Joint Movement for Realizing Sanitation Action (Gebraks) as a comprehensive and sustainable wastewater service program for communities living on the banks of the river.
"This movement is one of the efforts to restore the quality of the Martapura River contaminated from human waste," said the regent on the sidelines of the launch at the Masjid At Taqwa Green Open Space, Pekauman Ulu Village, East Martapura, on Thursday.
The launch of the sanitation program was marked as "kick off" the demolition of floating latrines which was a vision and mission program of the regent and deputy regent to reducing floating latrines along the river during their leadership period.
For five years since 2016, the local government targetted to demolish 1,000 floating latrines from a total number of about 9,000 floating latrines.
"We have started a floating latrine removal program since 2016 and up to last year (2018) 564 latrines have been demolished plus a target of 2019 as many as 300 latrines and in 2020 as many as 150 so the target is reached," he said.
He said, the demolition of floating latrines is an obligation but had to be supported by the community. In addition it must be balanced by their awareness to switch from the habit of defecation in rivers to the land or toilets.
