Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - Banjarmasin Mayor Ibnu Sina appreciates the creativity of students of Gajah Mada University (UGM) Yogyakarta who created a trash catcher during their community service program (KKN) in the city.
"I am proud that there are other people who are not citizens of Banjarmasin care about the garbage problem in the river and are full of creations in creating their catchers," he said here on Sunday.
Mayor was speaking at the closing of UGM KKN at Anno house Martapura River embankment, Jalan Pierre Tendean Banjarmasin, which accompanied withenvironmental care action.
In that action, UGM students collaborated with environment organization Forum Komunitas Hijau (FKH). Together they educated traders and visitors not to litter in rivers.
"Our hope is that this concern will spread to every community, both traders and visitors, so as to create a clean and healthy river environment and ecosystem," he added.
The work of UGM students is a special trash trap to reach the trash under the stilt house which is a characteristic of the settlement in Banjarmasin.
The simple tool that was created consisted of paralon pipes which are connected together so it could be long or short, and at the end is a trash trap, can be buckets or plastic baskets.
UGM students created the tool during their 45 days social service as they witnessed a lot of plastic waste, household waste, and industrial waste accumulates and floats under houses.
"A lot of garbage is going back and forth in the Martapura River and other rivers in the city, so it becomes dirty and uncomfortable to be seen besides damaging the environment," he said.
He pointed out that the huge amount of garbage in the river is dirty and uncomfortable to be seen, contrary to the Banjarmasin's promotion efforts as a clean and comfortable water city.
