Chairman of Commission II DPRD Kotabaru Syairi Mukhlis here on Friday said, the success of "Earth Saijaan" (Kotabaru) in the agricultural sector is a pride for the region, as it has been recognized not only in the province but also nationwide.
"But don't not make us content, otherwise necessary effort and hard work is needed that the welfare of society can be achieved to the fullest, one of which is with intensification of agriculture," said Syairi.
As the result of consultation meeting of DPRD Kotabaru with Director General of Agriculture of the Ministry of Agriculture in Jakarta, the central government provides opportunity for Kotabaru to re-develop commodities that had triumphed in the '80s until the 90s, those were pepper and cocoa.
Syairi admitted Kotabaru indeed had triumphed in the productivity of pepper and cocoa, including clove. Therefore it become a step in the right opportunity given to people who are already familiar with both commodities.
Related to the policy, PDIP politicians have asked the local government through relevant agencies undertake significant step in efforts to increase agricultural productivity of a number of leading commodities, in addition to rice, corn and soybeans.
Kotabaru contributed to increase the province agricultural production in the form of soy 25.10 percent and 19.87 percent from corn.
South Kalimantan Central Statistics Agency (BPS) announced the production of corn and soybeans has increased large enough concurrent with increase in harvested area and productivity.
"Maize production rose 8.92 percent and soybean production experienced a 17.78 percent increase," said Head of Statistics and Distribution of BPS South Kalimantan Arih Dwi Prasetyo.
He said corn production throughout 2015 amounted to 128 thousand tons of dry seed, an increase of 10 thousand tons of dry seed or 8.92 per cent compared to 2014.
