Banjarmasin, S Kalimatan (ANTARA) - South Kalimantan Governor Sahbirin Noor, popularly known as Uncle Birin, has instructed the Plantation and Livestock Office (Disbunnak) to increase vigilance against the tendency of the new clade of Avian Flu virus 2.3.4.4b after some cases found in the province.

Head of the agency Suparmi said that the governor's instruction is to folow-up Circular of Director General of Livestock and Animal Health Number 16183/PK.320/F/01/2023 dated January 16, 2023 regarding increased vigilance against Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) sub type H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4.
 
“We immediately follow-up (the circular) with other agencies, that handling livestock and animal health in their respective region, namely the Banjarbaru Veterinary Center and the Banjarmasin Agricultural Quarantine center,” Suparmi noted in a press statement received in Banjarmasin, Tuesday (Feb 28, 2023).

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health had issued a Director General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) Circular Letter Number PV.03.01/C/824/2023 concerning Precautions of Extraordinary Events for Avian Flu (H5N1) New Clade 2.3.4.4b, which was stipulated on February 24, 2023.

The circular requests provincial, district, and regional health offices and heads of Port Health Offices (KKP) across Indonesia to coordinate and cooperate with relevant agencies to prevent and control bird flu in humans.

She said, her staff moved quickly to coordinate as an effort to be aware of the emergence of HPAI in poultry farm in South Kalimantan.

Coordination was also done with the Health Office considering the HPAI virus sub type H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4. has a low risk of infection on human, but it has a tendency to become zoonotic infection.

Some counter measures taken include improving biosecurity, distribution of desinfectants to poultry farming centers, guidance, socialization and communication, education information (IEC) to the pubic about HPAI.

Monitoring interprovincial, districts and cities poultry traffic is also increased considering its highly traffic.

Veterinary authorities and authorized veterinarians in each region to assure that all poultry are healthy and not affected by HPAI.
