Banjarbaru, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - PT PLN South and Central Kalimantan Regional Main Unit (UIW) operates the lightning protection system to maintain the reliability of the system if there is a lightning strike on the network.
PLN South and Central Kalimantan's Communications Manager Syamsu Noor in Banjarbaru said on Monday the system would work to ward off lightning in the network, thus preventing disruptions that would cause blackouts.
"The system works to protect the network from lightning strikes. If the system runs normally, the electricity will not be affected despite lightning strikes in the network, until a blackout occurs," he stated.
He said the protection system had been proven to work normally when there was interference due to lightning on Tuesday (January 28, 2020) at 8:28 pm on the High Voltage Line (SUTT) transmission system.
He mentioned, the 150-kilo Volt (kV) high-voltage line (SUTT) transmission line between the Rantau and Barikin substation (GI) had experienced blackouts due to lightning strikes, but the electrical system was in a safe condition.
"Disturbances in the transmission due to lightning were responded well by the protection system, the automatic response substation stopped the electricity supply temporarily. Recovery of electricity supply can be done quickly, approximately 1.5 hours, electricity for all customers can be lit again," he said.
In detail he said, the protection system in Pangkalan Bun GI, Satui GI, Asam-Asam GI, Amuntai GI, Batulicin GI, Kasongan GI, Parenggean GI, Bagendang GI, Laut Island GI and Sampit GI also responded well, so the impact of the disturbance did not spread.
"Alhamdulillah, it took less than 2 hours, the electricity supply to the customers was normal. The normalization of the supply in the customer's distribution network can run quickly and safely," he said.
Technically, the substation automatically stops the supply of electricity to customers with a protection system securing the electrical system from widespread outages, and if it goes well, the condition of the South Kalimantan electrical system is safe.
