The existence of agricultural extension workers in Tabalong District is considered to be getting less attention, even though their role is vital in improving the agricultural sector.

Head of Tabalong Agricultural Counseling Division Sri Nana Agustina said that the lack of supporting facilities and infrastructure was an obstacle to optimizing their existence.

"Extension workers are required to increase their existence but the facilities and infrastructure are inadequate," Nana said.

Nana also hopes for good intentions from policy makers to pay attention to the presence of 75 extension workers in 12 sub-districts.

So far, extension workers have joined the Regional Board of the Indonesian Agricultural Extension Workers (DPD Perhiptani), but their whereabouts are not yet known to the public, especially among farmers.

This was conveyed by the Regent of Tabalong Anang Syakhfiani while opening a seminar on agriculture conducted by the local DPD Perhiptani.

"Agriculture extension workers should be independent, but beforehand they must increase their existence," explained Anang.

Anang acknowledged that the agricultural sector in Tabalong has increased considerably, proven to be able to surplus rice up to 57,144 tons per year and can supply up to East Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan.
