The  Indonesian Palm Oil Producers Association (Gapki) of South Kalimantan mobilized 340 firefighters for forest and land fire control (dalkarhutla) at the 2019 National Disaster Preparedness Day and the South Kalimantan Disaster Alert.

Secretary of the South Kalimantan Gapki Hero Setiawan in Banjarbaru, Friday (26/4), said the deployment of the most personnel was different from the previous year. Personnel were equipped with infrastructure and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the tools used to carry out extinguishing in the area around the concession.

"This year the personnel deployed represented all Gapki member companies. They are indeed personnel who are specially trained in handling forest and land fire (karhutla)," he said, when giving information.

He explained, his side not only recommended fulfilling equipment, but also increased personnel expertise by conducting guidance.

Not only that, a number of companies have carried out extraordinary activities, such as forming Fire Care Farmers, Disaster Awareness Villages, and Fire Care Communities around plantations. These groups facilitate the dissemination and guidance.

Gapki's target, in addition to ensuring its member plantations comply with Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 32 of 2016, is also to ward off accusations that the cause of fire (karhutla) is oil palm plantations.

"In addition to deploying the most personnel, in the right corner of the yard of the South Kalimantan Governor's Office there is the South Kalimantan Gapki Stand to showcase some of the completeness of the karhutla control infrastructure," he said.

According to him, equipment such as portable pumps are complete with various nozzles that are used in different places, for example for extinguishing in peat areas different from those used in mineral soil areas.
