Amuntai, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - A fire gutted seven houses in Sungai Pandan Tengah Village, North Hulu Sungai District, South Kalimantan, Tuesday afternoon at 12:30.

One elderly man was almost killed in the fire in Alabio. But a resident swiftly rescued him, while other people carried out the Dzuhur Prayer in the congregation at the local langgar (a small place of worship).

"The fire started from a house when the owner was not at home and there was only one elderly inside. I had time to ask people to rescue. Alhamdulillah there was someone who saved him," said Sungai Pandan Tengah Village Head Deddy Triady in Alabio on Thursday.

Deddy said the fire was so fast. In just a few minutes six houses around it were also burned. If it's too late to save the elderly, he must have been killed.

The fire brigade and residents were late to the burning house to extinguish the fire because it coincided with the Dzuhur prayer in congregation.

Deddy said that the cause of the fire was thought to have originated from the cigarette butts that hit flammable materials inside the house. Some suspect the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. The certainty is still awaiting the results of the police investigation.

As a result of the fire, he said, seven houses in Sungai Pandan Tengah Village were burned, one of which burned 25 percent. A total of 16 residents from 5 families lost their homes.

Local residents coordinated by GP Anshor tried to help alleviate the suffering of the victims on the first day of the fire incident. Followed by assistance from the Social Agency who held a public kitchen for three days.

The HSU Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) also distributed basic food aid, kitchen utensils, and school uniforms, as well as rice from the Food Security Agency which was symbolically handed over by the Deputy Regent H Husairi Abdi.
