Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - The city government of Banjarmasin stated it was overwhelmed to carry out cleaning of garbage in the Martapura River, due to a large amount of garbage coming.

In the past few days, water hyacinth waste with twigs and logs has invaded the Martapura River in the Banjarmasin area, up to hundreds of tons piled under the bridge.

"We are very overwhelmed by cleaning up this large amount of garbage," Hizbul Wathoni, Head of the River Division of the Banjarmasin Public Works and Spatial Planning Office, said on Thursday.

Because, he said, cleaning by deploying river waste cleaning vessels, broom-sweep boats, cannot be maximized. "The capacity of the broomstick boat is only 10 tons, even though the garbage has to be cleaned by hundreds of tons," he explained.

Hizbul said, the ship after entering the trash must go back and forth to the Gampa River (where water hyacinth is dumped), which takes 3-4 hours. So it's not very effective.

Meanwhile, he said, what faced is hundreds of tons of water hyacinth as wide as a football field piled up under the Pasar Lama bridge and the Pangeran Antasari bridge.

If he survives with this pattern of cleaning, he believes, it will take weeks to clear the size of this garbage pile.

"To reduce the stack, it must be decomposed and dissolved," he said.
