Banjarmasin, (Antaranews) - Head of the South Kalimantan Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Wahyuddin Noor said he was ready to deploy four helicopters to immediately extinguish the fires of five hectares of land around Jejangkit, Barito Kuala District.

"There are two points of burning land that are quite large, so it must be watered by two helicopters. If not enough, two other helicopters available will be deployed," he said.

BPBD has also prepared machines and hoses to help extinguish the burning land, but due to limited machinery and facilities, extinguishing did not run optimally.

Moreover, he added, when the fire broke out, the air was very hot and the wind was strong enough, so the hotspots spread very quickly.

"We are losing fast with strong wind gusts, so the fire quickly spreads to several other fields, the helicopter must be quickly deployed," he said.

Another obstacle was the availability of water around the burned area, which was quite minimal, making it difficult for officers.

The head of the Public Order Agency and Fire Brigade (Satpol PP & Damkar) Syamsir Rahman said currently the fire was attempted not to extend to the location of the rice plants prepared for the implementation of World Food Day (HPS).

"For HPS locations it has been blocked through canals or river, so the fire might not be able to spread to the location prepared," he said.

According to Syamsir, it was estimated that the cause of the fire due to the hot air conditions, causing the friction of grass. Another possibility due to negligence of individuals who throw cigarette butts carelessly, thus igniting a fire.

The land fires occurred when around 5 thousand students from several schools in Banjar and Batola District were simultaneously planting on HPS land.

The planting broke Muri's record of the most student participation in planting rice.
