The district government of Kotabaru, South Kalimantan, held traditional sports competitions, to preserve local wisdom nearly extinct due to modernization.

Kotabaru Deputy Regent H Syairi Mukhlis appreciated this event as a platform for athletes to connect and share.

“This event provides a platform for all of us to connect, especially athletes  can gather here. This competition also coincides with our district's anniversary,” he said.

He urged all organizations, not only the Recreational Sports Committee (KORMI), whkich are under the auspices of the regional government, to improve their internal, and achieve success.

“Let's celebrate the Kotabaru anniversary. Let's build together, we pray may Kotabaru always be the best and its people prosper,” he said.

Head of Tourism, Youth and Sports Office (Disparpora) Kamirudin hopes this event will continue year after yeer.

“KORMI's activities won't stop here. They will continue to develop and improve, bringing Kotabaru's good name to a higher, more elegant and accomplished,” he hoped.

Chairman of the Kotabaru Recreational Sports Committee (KORMI), Sugiyatno, said that KORMI has been entrusted by Disparpora to organize traditional sport event as part of Kotabaru's 76th anniversary.

“There are 48 inorga (sport organizations) fostered by KORMI. Today, 14 inorga are participating, and 1,387 participants competing,” he said.

The competition aims to foster development of parent sport organization (inorga), and prepare them for the Regional Sport Games (Porda) scheduled to be held in Tapin District and the National Sports Game (Pornas) in Central Sulawesi in 2027.

Meanwhile, traditional sports, recreational sports and streetsoccer competition took place from May 13 to 14, 2026, participated by participants from elementary, secondry and high schools. They competed in various traditional sports, including tarik tambang (tug-of-war), bola sundul (header), lari balok (beam running), halma, badaku, domino, street soccer, bakiak, panahan tradisional, gasing (spinning), hadang (handstand), panco (arm wrestling), and creative gymnastics.
