Batulicin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - The Tanah Bumbu District government plans to involve local communities to be more proactive in utilizing waste, thereby reducing piles in temporary waste disposal (TPS).

Regent of Tanah Bumbu Mardani H Maming in Batulicin on Wednesday said the local government is continuously trying to realize waste management based on Reduce, Recycle, Reuse (3R) principles through Gerakan Sedekah Sampah (GSS) or garbage aims movement.

"This needs the support of communities and mass organizations to work together to utilize waste. If the community is not pro-active, then this program can not run maximally," he said.

The GSS is by way of people sorting inorganic or dry waste and some are to be sold. The outcome of selling then to be handed out as alms for the needy

Currently, Tanah Bumbu has a landfill or last disposal which capacity is limited. If the community is not involved in reducing waste from upstream it will have its disposals quickly pile up.

Meanwhile, to build a TPA can cost billions of rupiah, while Tanah Bumbu is not able to prepare the budget for the construction of a new landfill.

With the GSS movement is expected to be able to meet the target of the Ministry of Environment, which is free of waste (zero waste) in the period of 2020.

"In 2017 and 2018, we will focus on implementing this GSS system cooperation to manage inorganic waste first, 2019-2020 will be increased by managing alms of organic waste," he added.
