The Indonesian government has announced plans to provide humanitarian assistance to Yemen, Sudan, Palestine, and Vietnam, all of which are currently grappling with natural disasters and armed conflicts.
Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Muhadjir Effendy, stated on Tuesday that the government will use funds managed by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) to deliver aid worth US$1 million each to Yemen, Sudan, and Palestine.
An additional US$1 million from the Finance Ministry will be allocated for Vietnam, he added.
"We will also send US$78,500 to Sudan, donated by Indonesians through the National Alms Agency (Baznas). The donations will be distributed alongside government assistance," Effendy said.
He added that the delivery of humanitarian aid to the four nations is scheduled for October 14.
According to United Nations data, rain-induced flash floods in Yemen have left dozens dead and displaced over 250,000 people since July this year.
Effendy explained that Yemen is in a dire humanitarian crisis due to the ongoing violent conflict between the Yemeni government and the armed group Houthis, which has severely damaged health infrastructure.
Speaking of Sudan, he noted that its residents face extreme difficulties in accessing medical services due to insecurity, a lack of medicines, medical equipment, healthcare workers, and the funds needed to run health facilities.
Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023 as its military battles the Rapid Support Forces. According to the UN, the war has killed at least 12,260 people and injured over 33,000 others.
Effendy also highlighted the situation in Palestine, noting that brutal and indiscriminate attacks by Israeli occupiers since last year have turned Gaza into a sea of debris, leaving tens of thousands dead, the majority of whom are children.
Regarding Vietnam, Effendy pointed out that Typhoon Yagi in September triggered torrential rains, floods, and landslides, devastating nearly 137,000 homes and forcing over 130,000 people to seek refuge.
"Indonesia will always strive to provide assistance to ease the suffering of our brothers and sisters in these countries," he emphasized.
