The Banjarbaru Penitentiary ranks of the Law and Human Rights Ministry's (Kemenkumham) South Kalimantan Office harvested as many as 250 kilograms or 2.5 quintals of melons cultivated by prisoners.
"The fruit is good and of good quality, no inferior of those on the market," said Head of Law and Human Rights Ministry's South Kalimantan Office Jumadi when leading the harvest at Banjarbaru Priosn, Friday.
This is the result of self-reliance coaching program run by Banjarbaru Penitentiary as part of Assimilation and Education Medium (SAE) for inmates or what called as warga binaan.
Melon garden becomes one of efforts of the Banjarbaru Penitentiary in providing training and skills for warga binaan so they have ability to be independent after prison term ends.
Jumadi appreciated this first harvest of melon as a tangible evidence of the success of coaching program in Banjarbaru Penitentiary.
The head of the office hopes that this success will be a good start for similar programs that can provide long term benefits for warga binaan (inmates).
Then it becomes a momentum to strengthen Banjarbaru Penitentiary's commitment in developing self-reliance program through SAE.
"With this program, the inmates are expected to be better prepared to face social life after competing their sentence," he said accompanied by Head of Banjarbaru Penitentiary I Wayan Nurasta Wibawa.
