Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Vice Rector IV of Cooperation Planning University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) Prof. Yudi Firmanur Arifin said South Kalimantan should be able to develop the utilization of non-timber forest products.
"During this time forestry commodity stuck in wood forest products, so that in the future non-timber forest product utilization must be developed," he said in Banjarbaru, Tuesday.
His statement was delivered at an international seminar related to innovation and the commercialization of forest products. Hundreds of participants from various elements from within and outside the country attended the seminar.
The international seminar was conducted by the Center of Leading Science and Technology Universities Research Consortium for Sustainable Tropical Forest Management (PT KR PHTB PUI) University of Lambung Mangkurat.
He said, the province has abundant natural resources such as natural forests and plantation forest, but have not worked up in maximum, especially non-timber forest products (NTFPs).
"The non-timber forest products are many in South Kalimantan, such as cinnamon, honey, cane and various other economic value forest products, but they have not developed," he said.
According to him, lack of innovation and product development strategies of forest products make the product benefits and prices relatively lower, so that technological innovation is necessary.
He said, operationalization of the Forest Management Unit (FMU) in Indonesia open up opportunities to the development of forest products, including the improvement of technology and innovation.
"Through KPH authority in managing its territory, forest products will be driving the real economy and further enhance the dignity of forestry in the region," he said.
