The densely populated Pasar Selasa or Tuesday Market in Geronggang Village, Kelumpang Tengah Sub-district, Kotabaru Regency, South Kalimantan, was engulfed by fire that broke out on Tuesday night at 20.15 p.m.

One of Geronggang residents, Herpani, said that the fire allegedly came from an unoccupied house.

"Fire allegedly started in a house with no occupant, who died some time ago," he said, Wednesday.

The market fire had burnt as many as 20 kiosks and 10 residents' houses around the market.

Residents assisted by a company struggled to extingish the fire.

Fire truck, two road sprinkler water tanks and two excavators were deployed.

Excavator were used to dismantle the burning buildings so as not to spread to the surrounding buildings.

The fire finally extinguished at about 22.00 p.m.or approximately two hours after the fire broke out.

Meanwhile, 10 families affected by the disaster fled to relatives in the area.
