Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - South Kalimantan will organize a Floating Market Cultural Festival at the Martapura River here from Sept. 16-20, 2016.

The five-day festival will feature various traditional art and cultural activities, and a parade of decorated canoes, said Mohandas, the head of South Kalimantan Tourism and Cultural Agency, here on Friday.

The South Kalimantan administration plans to hold the annual festival to attract foreign as well as domestic tourists.
The festival will coincide with the 490th anniversary of Banjarmasin city, the capital of South Kalimantan Province.

Some five thousand tourists visit Banjarmasin every week for an experience of the floating market and to enjoy the pleasures offered by river tourism.

"We are confident that we will be able to attract more tourists. Our target is to attract at least 100 thousand domestic tourists and 20 thousand foreign tourists, and we hope to achieve it. It will be good for the regional economy," he added.

The provincial administration and the administrations of its 13 districts and cities will intensify promotion of local tourist destinations and improve the supporting facilities and infrastructure.

A decorated canoe race, traditional Banjar kampong and local culinary bazaars, a dragon boat race, traditional music and dance performances, and a cultural parade will be organized during the festival.

The tourism ministry has extended its support to the floating market festival and will hold a puppet shadow theatrical show to enliven the festival.
