Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Head of South Kalimantan Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) Wagino said, early marriages in the province is the highest in Indonesia.


"The age of early marriage in South Kalimantan reached 9.24 percent. The percentage was the highest in Indonesia," he said at the BKKBN Local Coordination Meeting (Rakorda) and Technical Coordination Meeting (Rakornis) in Banjarbaru, Monday.

He said, in addition to the highest rate in Indonesia, the average age of early marriage found by BKKBN field officers ranges from 10-14 years.

Despite knowing the percentage and the range of ages, it has not been mapped out which areas most commonly found such an early age marriages.

"We are still doing research anywhere in South Kalimantan region of the most common early age marriages," he said on the sidelines of activities attended by all-South Kalimantan BKKBN representative.

But he said, the early marriage mostly involved women with economic factors and other social factors.

On the other hand, early age marriage is the most common in the population living in rural areas with relatively low levels of education.

"Most of women involved are victims, either because of economic factors, low levels of education to environmental and cultural factors," he said.
