Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Governor of South Kalimantan Sahbirin Noor said the province is determined to build a new economic power in the marine and fisheries sector.


"The South Kalimantan potential of marine and fisheries is large, so we are determined to build a new power through the two sectors," the governor said in Banjarbaru Wednesday.

Governor, in the forum which was attended by official of the Ministry of Maritime and Fisheries, Heads of DKP (Fisheries and Marine Agency) from across Indonesia and other invitations, said the determination implanted because of the marine and fisheries potential is quite large so that they can be developed into new economic power.

"We're trying to develop the marine and fisheries sector in order to become a driver of economic progress, in addition to raising the people's welfare," he said.

He mentioned the potential of South Kalimantan marine and fishery include brackish water which reached 84.9 hectares, pond cultivation with an area of ??39.5 thousand hectares. Then, 4.8 thousand hectares cultivation of minapadi (a system of rice growing where fish are also reared in wet fields), cultivation of floating net 5.4 thousand hectares and open waters with the potential of 1 million hectares.

Furthermore, the catch fisheries production in 2015 amounted to 308 thousand tons, the production of aquaculture 118.15 thousand tons, and seed production of 309 million.

"All the potential has to be able to contribute to both the government and society, so that the economy is getting better and waking up now," he said.

He said that almost all fishing businesses experiencing expansion accompanied with increase in consumption rate of people scattered in 13 districts and cities.

"South Kalimantan consumption of fish is 46.5 kilograms per capita, and that number is above the national average, so that the residents consumption of fish is better," he said.
