The Ministry of Transportation has readied as many as 350 buses for free mudik (exodus) for people keen to celebrate the 2022 Eid al-Fitr in their hometowns.
Secretary of Directorate General of Land Transportation at the ministry Marta Hardisarwono, during his visit to the type A Tirtonadi Bus Terminal here on Thursday, stated that those 350 buses could accommodate more than 10,500 passengers.
“In detail, 270 buses for the exodus (departure) can accommodate 8,500 passengers, and 80 buses for the reverse flow can accommodate 2,400 passengers,” he explained.
Apart from providing free buses for the exodus, the ministry has readied 34 trucks to transport up to 1,200 motorcycles belonging to the exodus participants, the secretary stated.
Hardisarwono noted that after two years of the Eid exodus being banned in the country, the community's enthusiasm to join the 2022 Eid homecoming exodus is high.
"For that reason, we have prepared free transportation for the exodus to anticipate traffic congestion, including by preparing special fleets to transport two-wheeled vehicles that are included in the exodus," he remarked.
He admitted that the ministry is still disseminating information and coordinating with large companies related to the provision of vehicles for the free exodus.
Meanwhile, Member of Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) Sudjadi expressed optimism that the government would provide more means of free transportation for the Eid homecoming exodus.
Sudjadi noted that the community would be happier if the government could provide more vehicles for the free exodus.
Earlier, President Joko Widodo had stated that the number of people, who will join the 2022 Eid homecoming exodus, is projected to reach 85 million.
The president had allowed people to join the Eid al-Fitr exodus if they had completed the primary vaccination and received the booster dose against COVID-19.
He also noted that every exodus activity should be conducted in strict adherence to COVID-19 health protocols.
