Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Swamp forests and proboscis wildlife researcher from the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) Prof Yoyo said galam and sago palm tree are natural fire barrier tree in swamp forest areas, so their presence must be maintained.

Yoyo in Tapin, South Kalimantan, on Monday said the presence of galam trees and sago able to withstand fires, so that fires do not spread as occurred during dry season.

"Galam and sago tree are two of the fire-resistant perennials, such as oak tree in Java, so that their presence must be maintained," he said.

Then, he said, to protect bekantan conservation areas in galam swamp forest Sungai Muning, it sought to plant sago tree and galam on the border region with the conversion of public land.

"Usually, for the benefit of agriculture, people burning the field. To avoid fire from spreading to the conservation area, we plant sago tree and multiply galam in the border area," he said.

According to Yoyo, galam tree is important to be maintained, because it is useful to keep the ecosystem in the area of ??the swamp, also the live habitat in the region, including proboscis monkeys.

Meanwhile, Head of the Tapin Environment Agency (BLHD) Zain Ariffin said quite massive land changing function in the district will allow that within the next 5-10 years people no longer see galam plants.

"Maybe the next decade we will be difficult to find galam wood, one of them as a result of logging done by people without control," he said.

Thus, he said, the galam rescue efforts by all parties concerned are urgently required.
