Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan, Oct 15 (Antara) - PT Pelindo III in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan has expanded the Trisakti container terminal of Banjarmasin by 2.2 hectares to 13 hectares in preparation ahead of the implementation of the Asean Economic Community (AEC).

Pelindo III manager Hengki Jajang Herasmana said with the expansion of the terminal that cost around Rp8 billion, it has an additional capacity to accommodate 120,000 units of containers .

"The additional capacity increase the capacity of the Trisakti container terminal to 800,000 units of containers now," Hengki said here on Thursday.

Hengky Pelindo II also has expanded the quay that it could accommodate four big ships at once from only three earlier.

Manager of the container terminal of Pelindo III Hermani Gunawan said loading and unloading process at the terminal is much faster now with the the procurement of new facilities.

In the first nine months of this year, there were 283,000 units of containers unloaded at the terminal or 28,000 per month far short of the target of 33,000 units per month .

"Since 2013, the inflows of goods to South Kalimantan has continued to decline , down around 4 percent in 2013-2014 and 7 percent in 2014-2015," Hermani said.

In 2014, unloading at the terminal averaged 30,000 units per month or 374,000 in the whole year , but now unloading averaged only 28,000 units per month.

The trend, however, is expected to improve in the coming months and years with expected revival of industries in the region.

Pelindo III, therefore, has to be ready for the change by providing more supporting facilities including expansion of the quay in anticipation of brisker activities in the port.
