Amuntai, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - The North Hulu Sungai Public Works Agency will immediately construct water supply systems in 10 locations in some remote areas of the district.


Head of Settlements Department of North Hulu Sungai (HSU) Public Works, Amos Silitonga, in Amuntai on Tuesday, said the residents who live far away from urban areas prone to consume groundwater which has an iron content harmful to health.

Nearly 90 percent of HSU dominated by wetlands caused some villages and sub-districts rather isolated, making hard to be reached by water services from the Regional Water Company (PDAM) in Amuntai.

Based on data from the HSU Regional Development Plan (RKPD) in 2016, yet as many as 35 percent household unaffordable of water services.

Amos said the source of groundwater in the swamp and mangrove areas contains iron and organic matter is quite high, which can be harmful to human health if consumed continuously.

"Drinking water containing iron tends to cause nausea, when consumed in large doses can damage the intestinal wall" said Amos.

Public Works through the field of Human Settlements in 2015 implement the Drinking Water Program Provider System (SPAM) for rural and will be built at 10 locations.

Through this program, land drilling is done with a certain depth in order to obtain water quality with minimal iron content.

"Once drilled, water straws inserted into the reservoir and then distributed to residents' homes through the pipeline," he said.
