Amuntai, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - The Ministry of Livestock develops swamp buffalo breeding as germplasm animal in North Hulu Sungai or HSU, South Kalimantan, through inseminator program.


Head of HSU Livestock Development Akhmad Rijani here on Saturday said that up to now there are 98 buffalo kalang (local language for stall) in the Sub-district of Paminggir, but only six groups chosen for the implementation of this breeding program.

Each group may have one to five kalang, and each group breeds a flock of swamp buffaloes belonging to local governments that will be the object of a nursery.

"For the program, each group get help nursery Rp50 million," said Rijani.

The nursery project, said Rijani, only implemented in seven districts and cities in Indonesia and one of them is North Hulu Sungai, which has many swamp buffaloes as its germplasm in South Kalimantan.

"Through this program we have trained six breeders become inseminator officers," he said.

Insemination, he explained, is swamp buffalo breeding by way of male bull sperm injection to female buffalo, also called mating injection system, so it can be selected sperm from males who are not by one venter.

Another way for this breeding program is to bring buffalo from other regions prop locations in order to avoid inbreeding among buffalo in a stall or livestock.

Until now, four groups of swamp buffalo breeders has produced 26 pups of swamp buffalo 6 months of age with a weight on top of the standard.
