A team of experts from the University of Lambung Mangkurat's various scientific fields conducted a comprehensive study regarding the massive floods that hit 11 districts and cities in South Kalimantan early this year.

"This flooding problem should not happen again in the future, so a comprehensive study needs to be performed," said ULM Rector Prof Dr H Sutarto Hadi in Banjarmasin, Tuesday.

He hopes that the results of the study will be taken into consideration in making policies by related parties, both the government at the provincial, district and city levels.

For example, regarding regulations on how to use land in the Meratus Mountains and so on, Sutarto wants each policy to be based on scientific study on environmental aspects.

Sutarto also gave an example of flooding in Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan. His party has provided input to Mayor Ibnu Sina for the river normalization program.

"This is the right moment to save rivers that have been blocked by buildings. When it rains with high intensity, floods occur due to disturbed river flow," he explained.

For this reason, every building that blocks the flow of water or river must be demolished without exception.

"Bylaw must be enforced. Whatever the building must be demolished if it conflicts with the river normalization program," said Sutarto.
