Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan, (Antaranews Kalsel) - The Task Force Unit of Sultan Adam Community Forest Park, located in Banjar District, South Kalimantan, has successfully bred a sambar deer, or Cervus unicolor, community forest park head Akhmad Ridhani stated here on Wednesday.
He revealed that six sambar deer were relocated from Central Kalimantan, and now, their population in the forest has increased to 14.
"The Mount Mandiangin area is a suitable deer habitat as they are rapidly breeding," Akhmad stated, adding that a deer named Surti has just given birth, and thus, the total number of this species is now 14.
The Sambar deer is a large deer native to the Indian Subcontinent, southern China, and Southeast Asia. The deer is now rarely spotted since it has been widely hunted for its meat and horns.
The task force unit continues to breed the sambar deer in a bid to prevent this species from becoming extinct and to also serve as a natural tourism attraction in Mandiangin.
Sambar deer can be tamed and easily interacts with humans by responding when called.
Apart from being a natural tourism attraction, the Mount Mandiangin peak also has 13 Dutch fortresses.
