Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (Antaranews) - Some airlines have done a feasibility study for a direct flight from Syamsudin Noor Banjarmasin Airport to Changi Airport, Singapore.

Head of Economic Bureau of South Kalimantan Government Nanang Adriani Noor on regional economic dissemination discussion organized by Bank Indonesia in Banjarmasin, said on Tuesday, Banjarmasin-Singapore direct flight is one way to welcome the ASEAN Economic Community (EAc) by 2015.

"Later this year, the possibility of direct flights can be realized. Currently some airlines have submit the licenses," he said.

In fact, he said, Changi Airport managing (Changi Airport Group) had a meeting with the Governor of South Kalimantan Rudy Ariffin and PT Angkasa Pura to discuss the plan. Some airlines attended were the Tigerair, Jetstar/Valuair, SilkAir, Garuda Indonesia, and Lionair.

Some considerations of direct flights, among others, to facilitate trade and investment, as well as efforts to increase tourist traffic between the two countries.

Based on the study, many Banjarmasin residents frequently visits Singapore and several other countries, and vice versa. The opening of a direct route of Banjarmasin-Singapore will effect better cooperation for the two countries.

Governor Rudy Ariffin said Banjarmasin-Singapore flight will be the first international flight at the Syamsuddin Noor airport.

According to Rudy, South Kalimantan is a potential in the aviation business, because the situation promises a safe and peaceful area, easy for any party who wants to invest, including capacity of the infrastructure aspect is getting better.

Meanwhile, Syamsuddin Noor development plan as an international airport will be realized in the near future. South Kalimantan Provincial Government in 2012 had been allocated a budget to create a DED (Detail Engineering Design) for the extension of the runway to 3,000 meters, making of parallel taxiways and aprons.
