Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (Antaranews) - A professor at the Forestry Faculty, University of Lambung Mangkurat, Prof.Dr.Ir HM Arif Soendjoto, reveals that vulture (known here as burung manyar) living and growing in the region of South Kalimantan since the last three years.

In fact, this kind of bird is only found in Java and Bali, have not been reported living outside of the region. Prof Arif informed it as a speaker in an environment seminar organized by Indonesian Kalimantan Biodiversity in Sasangga Banua Hall of the Governor's office, Banjarmasin, Saturday.

The vulture is now widely grown in the area of Aluh-Aluh, Handil Gayam, and Tatah Pemangkih in Banjar District, some area in Barito Kuala district, and some of the district of Tanah Laut.

He estimated that the bird was in this area because it was brought by traders from Java and usually go to the province by sea, maybe through Aluh-Aluh.

They may be loose from the merchants then the birds eventually breed, even now the population is sufficiently developed to be a local rice pests.

Some local people when asked, says professor, admits never saw the bird species before, and only appeared about three years lately.

This is the natural change, he added, beside to the emergence of new populations of birds now a few local bird populations are increasingly lost because of damaged habitat.

He pointed out, there are typical local birds hornbills who used to live in the forest now growing hard-pressed to find, because many forests in South Kalimantan were damaged.
