Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan (Antaranews) - Balangan District ready to become a central producer of onion in South Kalimantan, so that it can meet the needs of its own and no longer wait for the supply from outside the area.


"We have a dream to make Balangan as onion production centers in South Kalimantan so it does not need to be supplied from outside the island," Regent Balangan, Sefek Efendi said in Banjarbaru on Tuesday.

He said, Balangan which is about 200 kilometers from the capital of South Kalimantan, Banjarmasin, have suitable land planted with one type of this vegetable, so production will be increased.

He said the current land area is still under 10 hectares, but production is pretty good. So that the land will be developed in order to produce more harvest.

"Land topography is suitable to plant onion and the harvest from one hectare of land large enough, so that the area of land will be added to have much more harvest," he said.

While preparing sufficient land to increase yields, Balangan district will also help farmers in seeding and planting technology to be successful.

"Farmers guidance to be intensified in addition to planting technology to help crops capable of reaching targets so as to realize the dream of becoming onion production centers," he said.

In addition to trying to realize the dream become a center red onion, Balangan is also known as the producer of pumpkin, latex (rubber), and brown sugar in South Kalimantan.
