The government of Tanah Bumbu District, South Kalimantan, has proposed to the Ministry of Transportation to immediately close or locally lockdown sea and air transportation routes in the district to reduce the case of COVID-19.
"We together with the South Kalimantan Regional Leaders Communication Forum (Forkopimda) have agreed to close the sea and air transportation to anticipate the spread of coronavirus," said Tanah Bumbu Regional Secretary H. Rooswandi Salem in Batulicin, Friday (April 3, 2020).
He said, the proposal had been submitted to the ministry three days ago, but until now the local government has not received an answer whether the proposal was approved or not.
The proposal was based on the consideration that Tanah Bumbu is a transit area from several cities in Indonesia to other cities in Kalimantan. The increasing number of migrants has the potential to accelerate the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak if transportation routes are not closed.
"Indeed this is the authority of the central government through the ministry. We, therefore, hope the central government to immediately take a policy to what problem in the region," he pointed out.
Previously South Kalimantan Governor H. Sahbirin Noor insisted that airlines and shipping companies to reduce passengers heading to the province, including Tanah Bumbu.
"South Kalimantan should, in particular Tanah Bumbu, have done a local lockdown, but this is the authority of central government," he said.
