Water well in the District of Barito Kuala (Batola), South Kalimantan, releases gas and become a fire if ignited.

"The making of water well was by drilling to a depth of about 20 meters. It emitted the smell of gas through the wellbore and it become a fire if ignited with fire," Muhammad Faqih, one of the residents, told here on Friday (Dec 6, 2019).

There are two points of water well with gas emission, one at a resident house of Jailani and the other at a Mushalla (place of prayer smaller than mosque) Miftahul Jannah, both in the Village of Badandan, Cerbon Sub-district, Batola.

The making of water well was the central government program through the Batola Social Agency. In Badandan Village the government provided the construction of three water wells.

Two had been done and both released gas. Fire only came out if ignited with match. While the other one water well, at the house of Barmawi, until drilling had finished to the depth of 33 meters, there was no gas smell at all.

The Batola Police Chief Adj Sr Comr (AKBP) Bagus Suseno have ordered his men to stand guard at the location to avoid undesirable things.

"The drilling began on November 28, 2019 and was led by H Mubarak from Binuang, Tapin District, with six workers," he told. 

To remove the smell of gas from the well, he said, the workers let the water out the well by pumping with machine until the water released from the well was clear.

"Alhamdulilah (Thank God) the situation is condusive and we appeal to people to remain vigilant of the emergence of the gas by protecting the surrounding environment," he pointed out.
