Government owned water company PDAM Bandarmasih, Banjarmasin City, has to mix raw water for production because of the Martapura River is experiencing seawater intrusion.

According to Managing Director of PDAM Bandarmasih Ir Yudha Ahmadi, Martapura River water continues to experience high salinity because seawater enters, due to drought is quite long.

"It even had time to enter the Bilu River region which is the intake of raw water for our clean water production," he explained in Banjarmasin, Thursday.

The salt content of the Martapura River, said Yudha, had experienced an increase, until it was on the threshold of being processed.

"We are forced to mix raw water there with raw water brought from the Tabuk River water intake in the Banjar Regency," he explained.

Thus, he said, the salty levels of raw water extracted at the Bilu River intake could be slightly reduced, so that clean water treatment for customers could still be maintained.

According to him, the capacity of extracting raw water in the Bilu River reaches 500 liters per second.

"So it is very influential in the treatment of clean water if it stops. Distribution to customers will be reduced and even reach 30 percent," he explained.

PDAM Bandarmasih, he said, if the Bilu River water intake stopped, it having only one source, namely in the Tabuk River, Banjar Regency.

"In the Tabuk River the suction power is around 1,700 liters per second, but of course this power is still lacking to serve clean water for 170 thousand customers," he explained.

"We hope it will rain in these weeks, so it can push seawater into the estuary," he concluded.
