Tunas Baru Farmers Group of Sei Anyar Village, Banua Lawas Sub-district, Tabalong Regency, develops shallot varieties of Tuk Tuk by means of seeds independently.

Chairperson of the farmers group Roni Rifani said Tuk Tuk shallot is suitable for planting in the lowlands, such as Banua Lawas Sub-district.

"Alhamdulillah the experiment of the Tuk Tuk shallot varieties resulted to grow well," Roni explained.

This success attracted the attention of the local government, considering Banua Lawas Sub-district was dominated by swampland, that it is only suitable for the livestock sector and rice planting.

Head of the Vegetable Section of the Agriculture Agency Sri Astuti said the success rate of the Tuk Tuk shallot varieties was quite high compared to other varieties.

"For the first time planting shallots is done in the lowlands and the results are quite good," Astuti said.

In addition to Banua Lawas Subdistrict, shallot cultivation is also being developed in the sub-districts of Haruai, Jaro, Tanjung, Upau, Muara Uya and Tanta.

Tabalong Regent Anang Syakhfiani said efforts to diversify business are needed in order to increase people's income.

"It is evident that shallot cultivation can also be done in the lowlands, so it can support efforts to diversify businesses in addition to the livestock and fisheries sector," explained Anang.

Furthermore, the regional government will support infrastructure facilities for the development of shallots and other vegetables cultivation.
