Kotabaru, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - As many as 1,990 of 11,485 infants under five years old (balita) monitored in 28 community health centers (puskesmas) in Kotabaru District, South Kalimantan, were stunting or short and very short status.


Head of Kotabaru Health Office H. Akhmad Rivai said on Thursday based on the results of monitoring the nutritional status of children in 28 puskesmas as many as 1,990 or about 17.33 percent of 11,485 children under five (balita) had been weighed were in the stunting category.

Rivai explained, stunting status based on the nutritional status of height according to the age of 1,990 children, as many as 616 children or 5.36 percent were in the very short category and 1,374 children or 11.96 percent were classified as short.

The most stunting cases in the Sengayam Inpatient Health Center reached 37.64 percent or 169 out of 449 toddlers, followed by 161 children or 36.93 percent of 436 toddlers in Puskesmas Pudi, then 146 children or 33.18 percent of 440 toddlers in Puskesmas Lontar.

Stunting is a condition of failure to thrive in children due to chronic malnutrition, so children are too short for their age. Therefore, serious handling of stunting is needed to improve the nutritional status of the community and the quality of human resources.
