Tanjung, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - The South Kalimantan Peat Restoration Team (TGRD) is building barriers on a number of canals to restore peatland in Tabalong District.
"Making canal blocks is one of the efforts to restore peatlands in Tabalong," explained South Kalimantan TRGD Head Saut Nathan Samosir who said the restoration is carried out in Bangkiling Raya and Bangkiling Village, Banua Lawas Subdistrict.
There will be seven locations for canal blocking this year, namely in Bangkiling Raya Village, four locations and the rest in Bangkiling Village.
The canal block aims to increase the water retention capacity of the canal body and prevent a decrease in water level on peatland.
In addition to making canal blocks, the restoration team make 23 drill wells in Hapalah Village, Banua Lawas Subdistrict. This is part of a total of 354 drill wells in the province of South Kalimantan.
Including the socio-economic revitalization following the village affected by physical activities of bore wells and canal blockages also in the village of Hapalah in the form of biofloc of papuyu (climbing perch) fish.
Tabalong Regent Anang Syakhfiani supports the efforts of the peat restoration team in optimizing land in his region.
He hoped the restoration team would also support the optimization program of swampy lowland in Tabalong, especially Ampukung Village, considering that each rainy season the land is flooded and could not be utilized.
"About 5,000 hectares of swamp land in the southern region of Tabalong needs to be optimized so that it can become agricultural land," explained Anang.
