"Mantaas pottery crafters are now approximately 50 percent when compared to the 1970s," said local resident H Masrani (58) on his way back to Barabai, capital of HST, replied AntaranewsKalsel on Wednesday.
But the father of six children and grandfather of six grandchildren did not mention the exact number of pottery craftsmen in Mantaas (about 172 kilometers north of Banjarmasin) left behind, unless he said it because there is no regeneration.
"For example, young people of Mantaas now prefer other job they consider promising, although they may be instant rather than pursue the pottery," said the old man, a former swamp buffalo breeder, and is now doing the freshwater fish business.
In addition, he said, perhaps because of technological advancements so that both quantitatively and the quality of pottery is being neglected.
Mantaas community are famous pottery crafters in South Kalimantan, whose market share not only local residents but also out of the region.
Mantaas pottery products include kitchen, jug and "kapit" (place to save placeta), as well as various children's games such as saving place, etc.
