Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s National Alms Agency, or Baznas, is stepping up cooperation with Sudan to boost humanitarian relief as the African nation grapples with a prolonged civil war that has left more than 200,000 people dead, officials said.
The move followed a meeting Friday between Baznas Chairman Noor Achmad and Sudanese Ambassador to Indonesia Yassir Mohamed Ali Mohamed at the agency’s headquarters in Jakarta, according to a statement released Saturday.
“We at Baznas are deeply concerned about the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by our brothers and sisters in Sudan,” Achmad said.
He said the agency is committed to helping Sudanese civilians endure prolonged insecurity, underscoring Indonesia’s longstanding support for humanitarian principles and human rights.
Sudan urgently needs international assistance to address worsening health emergencies and other crises, Achmad said, citing recent reports detailing the scale of the devastation.
Baznas, a state-backed body that manages Islamic charitable funds, is prepared to lead fundraising efforts and mobilize aid for the Muslim-majority country, he added.

Achmad said his meeting with Ambassador Mohamed reinforced plans to intensify a humanitarian campaign for Sudan by encouraging more Indonesians to contribute to relief efforts.
“Our main focus is to support the health sector by providing medical facilities and essential medicines that are urgently needed,” he said. “We want to ensure that donations from the Indonesian public reach those who need them most.”
He expressed hope that assistance from Indonesia would help restore optimism among Sudanese communities struggling to recover from the conflict.
Ambassador Mohamed thanked Indonesia for what he described as consistent solidarity during the crisis.
He appealed for Baznas’ support in rebuilding Sudan’s health system, saying reconstruction of hospitals and the procurement of medical equipment were among the most pressing needs.
Sudan has been engulfed in fighting that has displaced millions and strained basic services, with aid groups warning of deepening humanitarian challenges across the country.
