South Kalimantan Regional Police Chief Brigadier General Agung Budi Maryoto here on Monday said the three fishing boats now secured by Water Police were from Java Island.
The three vessels were arrested for having violated the rules and conditions of fishing licenses, which should only be in the waters of Java, but in fact up to the province.
"The biggest mistake when fishermen catch fish from Central Java using cantrang, which is prohibited under the laws of the waters," he said.
The three ships arrested at different locations. Two ships, namely KM Karya Sakti and KM Soyo Barokah, captured in Mata Sirih waters near Kotabaru, while KM Puji Manunggal, caught in the Asam-Asam waters, Tanah Laut.
Currently, three captains were detained in South Kalimantan Police for further questioning, while the 55 crews had been released after the examination process was completed.
The suspects will be charged under the waters laws number 85/ 2013, with a penalty of 5 years in prison.
Cantrang is one tool that is prohibited, except for fishing conducted in the waters beyond 12 nautical miles. The ban was imposed because of fishing with cantrang cause small fish and other marine life, also caught, so it is feared will lead to extinction.
