Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - Head of Bank Indonesia South Kalimantan Representative Office Herawanto said Kalimantan coffee has the potential to be developed because it has a distinctive aroma and taste compared to other regions in Indonesia.

"Unfortunately, based on Agriculture Minister Decree (Kepmentan) No.830/2016 concerning the Location of National Agricultural Zone Development, Kalimantan is not included in the national coffee development area," Herawanto said in Banjarmasin on Thursday.

According to him, the potential for developing coffee in Kalimantan is very large, considering that based on plantation statistics in Indonesia for coffee commodities, Kalimantan coffee production in 2017 was 6,835 tons or 1.07 percent of total coffee production in Indonesia.

The position of Kalimantan coffee production, he said, is still below Sumatra which is 436,306 tons or 63.44 percent of national production and above Maluku and Papua coffee production 2,629 tons or 0.41 percent of national production.

Although under Kalimantan production, Papuan coffee is included in the national coffee development area and this is of concern to all parties involved in Kalimantan, especially South Kalimantan.

He hopes, through 2018 Duta Borneo Coffee Festival, Kalimantan coffee can be known nationally, so that Kalimantan can become one of the national coffee development areas such as Papua.

He believes the Duta Borneo Coffee Festival 2018 is able to introduce and educate coffee, especially the local South Kalimantan coffee, and to be a national agenda that in the end, it can move the South Kalimantan tourism sector.

To develop local coffee, such as Aranio coffee, Pengaron coffee, Mataraman coffee, Biih coffee, and others, according to him, a strategy is needed between stakeholders in South Kalimantan.

Separately, the Mayor of Banjarmasin H Ibnu Sina revealed that he was very supportive of Bank Indonesia's efforts in developing coffee in South Kalimantan because at this time cafes began to develop providing coffee drinks from various regions in Indonesia.
