Banjarbaru, S Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - The area affected by forest and land fire (karhutla) in a number of areas in South Kalimantan reached 1,084 hectares, dominated by peatlands and vacant land.

Head of the South Kalimantan Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Wahyudin in Banjarbaru said on Monday the largest area of burned land are in fire-prone areas.

"The area of burned land is more than a thousand hectares spread in a number of forest and land-prone areas and the most are in Banjarbaru which reaches 294 hectares," he said.

Other areas whose land is heavily burned are Tanah Laut 244 hectares and Banjar 120 hectares and other districts under 100 hectares.

He said the agency keep on guard against forest and land fires in five vulnerable areas that were located close to Syamsudin Noor Airport in Banjarbaru City.

"We are on guard of forest and land fires outside the airport area because if there is a fire and causes haze, the impact is very large for flights," he said.

According to him, the most burned area around the airport is peatland, making it difficult for the personnel of the forest fire prevention task force to extinguish it.

"Extinguishing peatland fires is very difficult because the flames on the surface are extinguished, but in the lower layers it can ignite at any time and the fire flares up again," he said.
