Barabai, South Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - A student is interested in water hyacinth that grows wild in rivers and swampy fields in Kambat Village, Pandawan Subdistrict, Central Hulu Sungai (HST).

He then conducts research and manages to process water weeds, which are considered one-sided and deemed not to provide benefits or as trash, to be useful to increase agricultural yields.

"Through a research assignment from a supervisor, I want to prove that water hyacinth which is considered useless for people in the Kambat can be useful," Adzhar said on Friday (10/8) in Barabai.

According to the final semester student of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM), water hyacinth which contains important substances that can fertilize the soil such as humic, calcium, cyanide, etc, can be used as organic fertilizer.

He explained the processing of organic water hyacinth fertilizer is cheap and simple. After being crushed with a machine or chopped until smooth using a knife and dried until the remaining moisture content is 20-30 percent.

"Then compaction is done in the shade, sow natural bio-fungicides and decomposers from animal manure according to size and stirred until smooth. Then covered it with tarpaulin for 2-3 weeks for the fermentation process and turned back to make it more evenly distributed," he explained.

Meanwhile Acting Regent HST H A Chairansyah through the Head of Public Relations Ramadhan expressed his appreciation and thanked for the research of ULM agriculture student to process water hyacinth into organic fertilizer.

"Research like this is certainly very useful and necessary for improving cheap and safe organic fertilizer-based agricultural products from negative impacts on land," he said.
