Rantau, S Kalimantan (AntarannewsKalsel) - Tapin fruit product, Mami banana, has been given a certificate as a local variety by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Mami is an acronym of Mahuli Miawa. Mahuli is a species of local banana, while Miawa is a name of a village, where Mahuli grows. It looks like Lemak Manis banana or Gold Banana or Gedang Limpung in other regions, but the size is smaller.

The Center for Agriculture Crop Varieties Protection and Agriculture Licensing Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia has issued the certificate for Mami banana with the number 361/PVL/2017 submitted to the Government of Tapin some time ago in East Java.

Acting Head of the local Agriculture Agency Wagimin said, Mami banana, which is growing and developed in Miawa Village, Piani Subdistrict, has a special quality rather than other Mahuli banana.

"The taste is sweeter, its yellow color is brighter, and of cource more durable," he told.

This local fruit variety was deliberately enlisted to be certified for the purpose to protect it for not to be stolen and claimed by other countries. Previously, Tapin enlisted Hiyung chili, which is claimed to be the hottest chili in Indonesia, to the ministry.

Now, as it has been certified, the local variety must be the responsible for the government to maintain and develop it.

Wagimin said that the central government had asked any local crop to be enlisted or certified to be a (protected) variety and avoid from being claimed by other countries.

"Certainly we will enlist other local crops and it is now in the stage of the process," he said again.
