Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has launched responsive measures after several regions across the country experienced landslides, extreme weather, flooding, coastal erosion, and wildfires within a two-day span, from January 31 to February 1.
"Together with regional governments and relevant institutions, BNPB has been carrying out emergency measures and data collection while providing affected residents with basic necessities," said Abdul Muhari, Head of BNPB’s Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication.
He noted in a statement received in Jakarta on Sunday that the BNPB has responded to a ground movement incident triggered by prolonged heavy rain in Bogor District, West Java, which left minor damage on 11 homes and affected 57 people in Karang Tengah Village.
The local disaster mitigation agency (BPBD), he added, continues to monitor the unstable soil conditions and has encouraged residents to evacuate in the event of further rainfall.
Muhari then referred to Klaten District, Central Java, where extreme weather struck seven villages across three sub-districts. He noted that the phenomenon caused minor damage to dozens of homes and public facilities and disrupted road access due to fallen trees.
Shifting to Indonesia’s eastern region, the official reported that floodwaters had inundated dozens of residences, houses of worship, and cemeteries in Soagimalaha Village, East Halmahera District, North Maluku.
In the same district, coastal erosion in Puau Village damaged seawalls, homes, and fishing boats.
Meanwhile, Parigi Moutong District, Central Sulawesi, was battling forest and land fires that spread across roughly one hectare. The blazes were quickly extinguished, and no fatalities were reported.
"With the various hazards in mind, we urge local residents and authorities to continue strengthening preparedness against the risks of both wet and dry hydrometeorological disasters," Muhari stated.
He addressed communities living along riverbanks and coastlines, emphasizing the importance of spatial and environmental awareness, identifying evacuation routes, and staying updated with weather information from official sources.
