Banjarmasin, April 18 (Antara) - Head of the Community Training Center of the Rural and Backward Village Ministry Anto Pribadi said 19 ministries have been committed to supporting development of 33,948 backward villages in Indonesia through programs set respectively by the ministries.

Anto said here on Tuesday based on data released by the Rural and Backward Village Ministry in 2015, around 33,948 villages or almost 46 percent of 74,754 villages in the country were still backward.

He said currently 19 ministries have programs to help in improving rural community basic services such as in the fields of health, education, infrastructure, farming , industry, etc.

The target is that through the programs , the government would be able to promote the status of 5,000 backward villages to developing villages and 2,000 developing villages to self supporting villages in 2017-2019, he said.

"Developing 2,000 villages to become self supporting is not an easy job. It would need hard work by all related elements. However, it is a lofty duty therefore, we have to meet the target," he added.

He said 16.6 percent of villages in Indonesia are still without health facilities in the form of clinics, and 33.42 percent or 2,547 villages are without electricity ; 24.12 percent have poor road access, 21.58 percent are without basic educational facility and 58.11 percent without secondary high school facility .

Currently, the number of people living below the poverty line in rural areas was around 17.67 million or 14.11 percent of the country`s population. The number was much larger than poor people in urban areas of around 10.34 million or 7.79 percent.

One factors causing larger number of poor people in rural areas is limited working opportunity and minimum basic services, Anto said.

The condition has caused high rate of urbanization , now reaching 50.2 percent, he said, adding, the rural development program is expected to put a brake on urbanization reducing the rate to 33.4 percent in 2025.

Among attempts taken to improve the condition of backward villages to become self supporting included development of economic growth centers in rural areas, and sustainable development of natural resources .
