The National Defense Force (TNI) is ready to deploy 800 personnel from the Zeni Tempur Battalion of the Diponegoro IV Regional Military Command for conducting post-flood measures in Demak District of Central Java.
"We are planning to field eight teams, or 800 personnel, to help with cleaning up flood-affected regions once the inundation subsides," Diponegoro military commander, Major General Tandyo Budi Revita, said in Demak on Thursday.
He made the statement after accompanying Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), Basuki Hadimuljono, to an inspection of the Wulan River embankment, which breached on February 5, 2024.
According to Revita, the Diponegoro Regional Military Command will station one military unit in each flood-affected village in the district.
Earlier, the regional military command had deployed 70 officers to assist the government in patching leakages in the breached embankment. The repair works have been completed.
Meanwhile, the commander of Kudus Military District, Lieutenant Colonel Yudhi Wibowo, said that his office is ready to dispatch personnel to help Demak during the post-flood period.
"We are currently waiting for an order to deploy personnel needed," he informed, adding that he had earlier stationed soldiers in Karanganyar and Ketanjung Villages.
He added that the Kudus Military District Command has been coordinating with the Kudus Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and local institutions to provide tanker trucks for spraying water on roads to rid them of mud.
As of Thursday, floodwaters in the villages of Ketanjung and Karanganyar that border Kudus District had begun to subside, allowing some people to return to their homes.
To expedite efforts to pump out the floodwaters, the PUPR Ministry has provided 22 water-suctioning pump machines with a total capacity of 11,500 liters per second.
