Balangan, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - As of September 2016, a team of Balangan Health Agency discovered 18 cases of leprosy in the Earth Sanggam, (nickname of the district).


Head of Eradication, Disease Control, and Environmental Health (P2PL) at the local Health Agency Adawiyah revealed there are at least 18 patients found directly by officers in the field.

"This is increasing, in 2014 we found eight lepers, in 2015 there was a big increase we found 14 patients, and by September 2016 we found 18 lepers," she said.

According to Adawiyah, people with this disease truly discovered by health center staffs in the field.

"We expect the participation of public to report early leprosy symptom of self, family and neighbors," she said.

Adawiyah explained, one of the signs of early symptoms of leprosy is like phlegm but numb.

The Health Agency itself admitted that it had tried to continuously minimize leprosy in Balangan.

"Already done regularly over the years, especially community health centers (puskesmas) actively check to the community, both individuals and groups, we continue give counceling related to leprosy," he said.

According to her, other than the need to improve personal and environmental hygiene, also consult immediately if there is an early symptom of leprosy.
