Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Deputy Chairman of South Kalimantan Legislative Council (DPRD) Asbullah asked the government to seriously protect proboscis monkey, an endangered species and the mascot fauna of this province.


He deplored the massacre of several long nose apes or proboscis monkeys in Balangan, South Kalimantan. He asked the authorities to follow-up this case.

"If necessary perpetrators of the massacre of this protected animal get firm action, for whatever reason," said this Secretary of the Regional Leadership Council (DPW) of PPP South Kalimantan in Banjarmasin on Wednesday.

In order to protect the proboscis monkeys from extinction, he agreed the necessity of conservation areas, so as to facilitate supervision or restrictions for those who want to hunt.

"Especially endangered proboscis monkeys kept diminished in recent years as more forest areas where the primate live are shrinking, and they are hunted down," said Asbullah.

In recent days, police has been securing citizens of the neighboring province of Central Kalimantan who allegedly committed bekantan massacre in Balangan, South Kalimantan.

The massacre of proboscis monkeys in Balangan with the reason for consumption. It lasted a long time but apart from legal action.

While the data from the Directorate General of Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDE) of Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Indonesia in the last 30 years the population of proboscis shrank by 50 percent.
