Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Banjarmasin Water Police Unit (Satpolair) together with South Kalimantan Directorate of Water Police and River Concerned Communities (Melingai) cleaned up the piles of garbage that disrupted river traffic in the city.


"The rubbish was piled up under a Pangeran Antasari bridge and not drifted away, until disrupted river transportation," said Chief of Water Police AKP Untung Widodo Sst in Banjarmasin on Sunday.

He said that the cleaning of heap of Ilung (water hyacinth), household waste and other types waste was done by binding and pull the stack.

River clean-up activities were carried out on Sunday (24/1) morning around 09.00 and deploy four kelotok (traditional boat usually fitted with motor). Then cleaning done by using manual method to withdraw the rubbish in order to disentangle.

"The river is one of the main transport lines in the city famously known as the city of a thousand of river, so the river cleanliness should be maintained," said the man who is familiar with the media crew.

Untung said, due to the piles of garbage that extended under the bridge of Pangeran Antasari it kept Martapura River track totally disconnected because of water transportation can not passing.

Due to the large pile of garbage and trunks of trees made people can stand or walking on the garbage floating in the river.

"People Banjarmasin used to call garbage heap as pampangan, and almost every year there are trash heap like this," he said.
