Banjarmasin (South Kalimantan Antaranews) - South Kalimantan farmers continues to develop organic food crops to produce safe and high-quality agricultural products in preparation for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).


Director of Agricultural Product Processing of the Ministry of Agriculture Andjar Rochani at the dissemination seminar Fresh Food Safety Regulation of Plant Origin (PSAI) here on Friday said the government continues to pursue this organic food.

According to her, with the availability of organic products on the market, is expected to grow public awareness to consume high quality food.

Organic food development, she said, in addition to improving the safety of public health, while enhancing farmers' competitiveness, especially in the face of the MEA.

"We will always support farmers to continue to improve the competitiveness through the development of organic food to produce high quality agricultural products," she said.

In addition, she said, organic food is now beginning to be occupied by farmers from various regions in South Kalimantan will also be able to boost the economy and welfare of the community, because the resale value is higher than non-organic products.

Through high-quality food production, she said, then the implementation of the MEA later, local farmers will be much better prepared.

"If we are not ready, then it is likely, food products from other countries, will enter freely into our country," she said.

Unfortunately, organic food production has not been accompanied by a good marketing program, so some farmers are having trouble marketing the products they produce.

One organic rice farmers, Asnan said, it had been long since farmers in Hulu Sungai Utara developing organic farming by utilizing the existing fertilizer around the farming environment.

"From the first we did not ever use chemical fertilizers, because of the potential of organic fertilizer, such as Ilung and others quite large," he said.

In addition, he said, the condition of the land is marsh or swampy, is also very beneficial for the development of this organic rice.

Just, added Asnan, because they do not know where these products are sold, the farmers eventually sold together with rice in general.
